A primary DNS server is configured by editing /etc/named.conf . Common resource record types are
SOA ” Start Of Authority defines configura tion parameters for the entire zone.
A and AAAA ” Hostnames and IP addresses, A for IPv4 and AAAA for IPv6.
NS ” Name Server records for other name servers within the zone.
MX ” Mail Exchanger records for email servers.
CNAME ” Canonical Name records define aliases.
PTR ” Pointer records hold reverse lookup information.
At bootup , DNS is started in the script /etc/rc2.d/S72inetsvc , but only if the configuration file /etc/named.conf exists. The DNS daemon process is in.named .
A secondary DNS server has no zone files of its own. They are automatically copied from the primary server when it starts.
A DNS client uses /etc/nsswitch.conf to determine lookup order and /etc/resolv.conf to identify name servers to be consulted.
Error messages go to /var/adm/messages . Use nslookup to test a DNS server
Send a HUP signal to in.named to reread the configuration file, a USR1 signal to turn on debugging, a USR2 signal to turn off debugging and an INT signal to take a snapshot.
