IPV4 Routing

  • The routing table is memory-based . Use netstat “r to view the routing table.

The routing search order is 1) local network, 2) routing table, and 3) the network address. 4) A check is made for a default route. 5) No route is present, so ICMP returns a destination network is unreachable message.

  • The /etc/inet/networks file is used to associate network numbers with names .

  • Configure static routes with the route command or by editing /etc/defaultrouter and /etc/gateways .

  • Dynamic routes use the in.routed daemon started in the script /etc/rc2.d/S69inet .

  • Create the file /etc/notrouter to disable a system from acting as a router.

  • Classless interdomain routing (CIDR) allows systems to be grouped together for routing purposes, making more efficient use of available IPv4 addresses ”also known as supernetting .

  • Routing problems can be diagnosed through the use of ifconfig , ping , netstat “r and traceroute .
