13.3 Sample WAP Configurations


The architecture and protocol stack discussions in the previous sections show that there are several possible stack configurations using the WAP technology. WAP proxy capabilities can be tuned to specific service requirements. Figure 13-5 shows a complete protocol stack from the original WAP architecture. The WAP proxy translates HTTP traffic between datagram-based protocols (ESP, ETP, WTLS, WDP) and the connection-oriented protocol commonly used on the Internet (HTTP, SSL, TCP).

Figure 13-6 shows a WAP client device directly accessing a Web server via the Internet. The wireless IP router represents a standard part of IP network with specific wireless technology support. In this direct access scenario, the client will not be able to use wireless optimizations defined for TCP and HTTP.
