Using the Troubleshooting Information in This Chapter

The information in this chapter consists of a set of problem descriptions and suggested solutions. For each problem covered, a short description of the observable symptoms is given, followed by an explanation of the root cause and a suggested course of action.

The sections of this chapter are organized first by functional area and then by problem symptoms. For example, one section is devoted to problems you might encounter while compiling an application, and another covers problems that can occur during event submission (in a running application). Within the compilation section, there are separate subsections for problems that manifest themselves as syntax errors and those that appear to be SQL connectivity issues.

When you encounter a problem while working with SQL-NS, find the section of this chapter that corresponds to the functional area you're dealing with. Then look for a subsection that matches the specific symptoms you see. In some cases, there may not be an exact match, but reading problem descriptions that seem related may give you clues as to how to solve, or further diagnose, the problem you are experiencing.

When you compile or administer a SQL-NS application, problem symptoms are generally easy to observe because the tools provide immediate feedback. In running a SQL-NS application, symptoms are sometimes more difficult to see because the SQL-NS engine does not provide direct feedback. To see information about problems that the engine encounters, you need to consult the Application Event Log on your system. Refer to the "Using the Application Event Log" section (p. 484) in Chapter 14, "Administering a SQL-NS Instance," for information on how to obtain error messages, warnings, and informational messages from the Application Event Log.

Note

The information in this chapter can be used to troubleshoot problems you may experience with the sample applications in this book, as well as other applications of your own. If you are having trouble with the sample applications, you can also look for troubleshooting information and source code updates in the errata section for this book on the Sams Publishing website. For instructions on how to access this information, see the note in the "About the CD-ROM" section (p. 4) in this book's Introduction.
