Configuring and Managing a Stub Zone

A stub zone is a copy of the zone containing only resource records to identify the authoritative DNS server for the zone. Stub zones improve name resolution efficiency and keep delegated zone information current by providing the DNS server in the parent zone with its resource records list of name servers for its child zone. The master DNS server for the stub zone usually hosts the primary zone and is authoritative for the child zone. Stub zones can simplify DNS administration by distributing their resource lists to authoritative DNS servers for the zone without adding, maintaining, or using secondary zones. Companies with multiple domains can use stub zones to simplify DNS administration.

On a DNS server configured as a DC, stub zones store their resource records in Active Directory. Active Directoryintegrated stub zones contain the stub zone name, zone type, and the list of master servers.

A stub zone consists of the following:

  • A Start of Authority (SOA) resource record.

  • Name server (NS) resource records.

  • Glue A resource records (a new DNS resource record added in Windows Server 2003). A Glue A resource record is a delegation record used for finding authoritative DNS servers for the delegated zone.

  • One or more master DNS servers IP addresses used to update the stub zone.

To add a stub zone, perform the following steps:

  1. Open your DNS MMC console.

  2. In the console tree, right-click your DNS server and choose New Zone. The New Zone Wizard opens.

  3. Click Next and select Stub Zone as shown in Figure 6.8.

  4. In the Active Directory Zone Replication Scope dialog box, select how you want DNS zone data replicated. If you have just one domain, accept the default selection and click Next.

  5. Select Forward Lookup Zone and click Next. Type in your zone name and click Next.

  6. To configure master DNS servers for your stub zone, type the IP address of the DNS master server in the Master DNS Servers dialog box and click Next as shown in Figure 6.9.

  7. Click the Finish button.

  8. Add records to the stub zone manually or dynamically update the stub zone from the master DNS server.
