Section 8.6. Tent Cards

8.6. Tent Cards

Using PowerPoint, you can easily create and print custom tent cards , those little pup-tent-shaped papers many presenters scatter on conference tables so that audience members can find their seats easily. You can either build tent cards from scratchby inserting text boxes and rotating them (page 121) so that when you fold the printed slide, each name reads correctlyor you can create them using one of the many templates available on the Web, as described below.

To print a tent card from a template:

  1. Select Office button New More Categories.

    A gallery of templates appears.

    Turning Your Slideshow into Slides

Those tiny cardboard squares with cellophane windows that Dad used to pull out post-vacation may seem old-fashioned, but 35mm slides are still the best choice for presentations where crispness, clarity, color accuracy, and resolution are critical. Say you're giving a presentation (with lots of photos) that describes a specific eye disease to an audience of doctors . The accurate color and clarity of a 35mm presentation is definitely worth sacrificing the slide transitions, sound clips, and interactivity you get with a computer.

To create 35mm slides from a PowerPoint presentation, you first need to film the presentation using a special camera, like Polaroid HR 6000 film recorder. Then, you just develop the film and mount the slides. Although the process is too camera- and lab-specific for this bok, you can find more details at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/212397/en-us.

Alternatively (and more expensively), photo labs (sometimes called service bureaus ) can turn your electronically transmitted PowerPoint file into 35mm slides for you. A few to look into: www.ezslides.com/ppt.htm, www.genigraphics.com/, and www.colorslide.com/powerpoint.html.

  2. Select "Name and place cards" "Numbered table tents," and then click Download.

A confirmation dialog box appears, followed by the short-lived message "Downloading template." Then the template you see in Figure 8-8 appears in your workspace.

Figure 8-8. Because many (if not all) presenters use tent cards, you shouldn't have any trouble finding tent card templates on the Web. (The author of the template shown here even used the Notes page to list helpful instructions for customizing, printing, and folding the tent cards.) But tent cards are easy to make from scratch, too. For the best results, choose a thick, bold, black font.

Note: You'll find two additional tent card templates on this book's "Missing CD" (www.missingmanuals.com): tent_half.potx (designed to be folded in half) and tent_third.potx (designed to be folded in thirds ).
  3. Replace the text for each card, front and back, with an audience member's name. Click Office button Print to print the cards.

To assemble the printed tent cards, follow the instructions you see on the Notes page.
