Lesson 14. Managing Your Site

Developing a Website generally begins with the planning phase, during which you conceive of the idea for a site, develop the site file and navigational structures, gather content, and design the look and feel of the site. These steps of preparation usually occur before you start working in Macromedia Dreamweaverfor the project site you are working with throughout this book, Yoga Sangha, these steps were already done for you, as described in Lesson 1. The planning phase is followed by the production phase, during which you use Dreamweaver to build and test the actual pages of a site, as you learned to do over the course of Lessons 2 through 13.

The work that is put into a Website does not end when you complete the production phase. After production, the Website needs to be made available to the audiencethis is done through a procedure known as launching, in which the site is announced and

promoted after being uploaded to a server. In addition, many Websites need to constantly evolve, right along with the changing needs and desires of their audiences, to remain effective and continue to draw new and repeat visitors. The ongoing process of making changes, updating and adding new content, and constantly optimizing a Website is known as site maintenance. The transition from the production phase to the maintenance phase of a Website involves setting the site up on a server, thoroughly testing the site, going through the process of launching the site, and preparing for ongoing management and maintenance.

Site management, which is a vital part of Web development, is important for the continued use of a site. Dreamweaver provides extensive management tools that enable you to easily update and control your Website, maintaining site files that are located in the local root folder as well as on the remote server. Dreamweaver uses site definitions to keep track of your files, allowing updates to be made automatically when you use site tools to perform maintenance tasks including moving, adding, and deleting files and folders. Managing the workflow of a team can be done through a variety of tools that are geared toward coordinating teamwork and collaborative efforts. Through Dreamweaver, you can manage multiple Websites, import and export site settings, and even perform quick transfers by creating connections to servers without having to go through the process of setting up a site.

Note

There might be an overlap between the planning, production, and maintenance phases; and the specifics of what is done in each phase can vary from site to site. For example, testing should occur regularly before and after the launch (basic testing by previewing pages in the browser was covered in Lesson 1; more in-depth testing is covered in Lesson 15).
