Viewing Document Properties

Although Adobe Reader does not permit you to change document properties, the Document Properties dialog and in particular the Description tab in Document Properties provide you with information about the active PDF document. Of special importance to you are the file size, the page size, and the original authoring program that produced the PDF document.

To open Document Properties:

1.

Open a document in Adobe Reader. Select File > Document Properties or press Ctrl/Command+D. The Document Properties dialog opens (Figure 4.7).

Figure 4.7. Press Ctrl/Command+D to open the Document Properties dialog.

2.

The Description tab provides information related to the authoring program in which the document was created, the PDF creation date, the last known modification date, the file size, and the document description.

3.

Click the Security tab for information about any encryption applied to the document; select the Fonts tab to find out what fonts are embedded or substituted; and click the Advanced tab for miscellaneous information on PDF Settings and Reading Options.

4.

Click OK to exit Document Properties.

Why are Document Properties important?

Obviously you can't do much to affect the Document Properties since you can't make any changes in the dialog. The Document Properties dialog box is strictly informational and can help you understand data related to the current document you're viewing.

The Description tab shows the PDF creation and modification dates. This information helps you target a recent version of a document in the event you have several versions on your hard drive.

The Security settings inform you at a glance if a file is encrypted and what permissions you have for working with the file. If permissions restrict printing, for example, you'll know immediately after clicking the Security tab.

The Fonts tab lists fonts that are embedded and substituted in the document. If font substitution is used, the PDF may not print properly to your printer, and you may experience situations where files won't print at all due to font problems. If you know what fonts are being substituted and you have those fonts on your system, you can load them and then print the PDF. When the fonts are loaded, no font substitution takes place.
