Participating in a Browser-Based Review

Browser-based reviews are performed over networks or Web servers. To begin a browser- based review, a PDF author creates a PDF document enabled with usage rights using the Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions Server (ARES) and saves the file to a specific location on a network or Web server. The author then sends email to the review participants inviting them to participate in the review and informing the reviewers of the file's network or URL location and how to participate in the review. For more information about Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions Server, see Appendix A.

Reviewers open a PDF document in the Web browser and the comment tools appear inside the browser window. Additional tools for uploading comments, downloading comments, and working offline appear in the browser window.

Ask a PDF author to send you an invitation to participate in a browser-based review.

To participate in a browser-based review:

1.

Open your email program and view the PDF author's message. Figure 15.7 shows a message invitation for participating in a browser-based review.

2.

Double-click the file attachment. The file attached to the message is a Form Data Format (FDF) file that contains a link to the PDF document for you to make comments.

3.

The file opens in your browser. Note that the file does not open in Adobe Reader. In the Toolbar Well inside your browser window you have additional tools for working offline, and for sending and receiving comments (Figure 15.8).

4.

If you don't think you can finish your review in one session, or if you need to work offline, click the Save and Work Offline tool. You are then prompted to save the document to a target folder. Navigate to a folder on your hard drive and click Save. If you choose to work online, you can make comments within your Web browser using the Reader comment tools.

5.

Add comments. You can use all of the comment tools described in Chapters 11 and 12 to comment on the document while working in your Web browser.

6.

After completing your comments, click the Go Back Online tool (Figure 15.9).

NOTE

Once you click the Save and Work Offline tool, the Go Back Online tool takes its place.

7.

To upload your comments, click the Send and Receive Comments button. Your comments are uploaded and any reviewer comments not downloaded in an earlier session are added to your copy of the PDF file.

NOTE

You can choose to work directly online while viewing your document inside the browser window and then click the Send and Receive Comments tool, or click the Save and Work Offline tool to work offline. After working offline, be certain to click the Go Back Online tool and then the Send and Receive Comments tool to upload your new offline comments.

Where are files stored during online reviews?

PDF authors can upload documents for online commenting in one of three locations for use by Macintosh and Windows users, and in an additional two locations for Windows users.

For cross-platform commenting, PDF authors can choose to upload files for online commenting to a server locationthe kind of connection and setup is not important for you to understand as a review participant. What is important is that your system administrator informs you of where and how to access the files. If you've been granted permissions to access an area where a file is located for online commenting, double-clicking the FDF file in your email program takes you to the proper server location.

For Windows-only users, comments can additionally be stored in databases or as Web discussions. Again, access to the location is something you need to discuss with your system administrator.
