setting project defaults

Premiere Elements offers a boatload of preference settings accessed by choosing Edit > Preferences. In most instances, the default settings will do, but there are several settings to be aware of before starting your first project.

These preferences are not project specific and will remain in place until you change them.

Make sure that all Scratch Disks are set "Same as Project" which will place these files in the same folder as the project file.

If you don't save the project in the interim, Premiere Elements will store the designated number of project versions in the Auto Save folder, which you can restore by selecting them just as you would a normal project file. The default of 5 is fine here.

Note that Premiere Elements stores your Auto Save folder in the same folder as your project file.

One final preference.

Since we're working in NTSC, there are 30 frames per second (25 in PAL), so the default 150 frames value for still image duration translates to five seconds. Use the default setting for now; you'll learn about choosing a different duration in Chapter 3.

  • Premiere Elements has one workspace that you can't reach via a button on the Taskbar. Specifically, you have to open the Advanced Effects workspace by choosing Workspace > Advanced Effects from the main menu. More on that in Arrange Effects Workspace on page 64.

  • Note that Premiere Elements offers several useful tutorials accessed by clicking the tutorial button on the opening screen.

  • Changing the Still Image Default Duration affects pictures inserted after you make the change (not those previously inserted into the project).
