73 Getting Started in Audition

#73 Getting Started in Audition

For more advanced audio editing functions like Noise Reduction, Audition is your tool of choice. Let's review Audition's interface, then get to work. Figure 73 shows Audition in Edit mode, which you'll use for all techniques shown here. In the middle of the upper panel, you'll find buttons that open the Multitrack View, where you can mix multiple audio tracks, and the CD View, a simple and effective way to combine different audio tracks into a CD-Audio disc.

Figure 73. In Edit mode, Adobe Audition resembles most WAV editing tools, with a big work area and easy-to-use supporting tools.

Importing Video Files

Audition can import a full range of audio files (WAV, CDA, MP3, AIF, WMA, and PCM) and import audio from many video files (AVI, MPEG, MP2, M2T, WMV, and MOV). The most notable exception is the inability to import RealAudio files.

Operation in Edit mode is similar to Premiere Pro and After Effects. You import files into the program, and Audition stores them in the Files panel. Once selected, the audio waveform appears in the Display area, where you can apply effects from the Effects panel or Effects menu item.

You play the file using controls in the Transport panel. Select the portion of the file to be edited by clicking and dragging the current-time indicator in the Display area, and adjust the view with controls in the Zoom panel. These controls allow you to display the entire file for a big-picture view, or zoom in to specific regions for fine-tuning. If you are zoomed in, you'll find the Waveform slider in the upper Display area the fastest way to navigate through the audio file.

Exporting Streaming Audio

In addition to WAV and many other uncompressed formats, Audition can output MP3 and WMA audio, with extensive output options for both. Again, the most notable exception is RealAudio support.

If you're using the program on a standalone basis, you'll typically import a WAV file, perform your edits, and then export in your distribution format of choice. If you access Audition by right-clicking an audio clip on the Premiere Pro timeline and selecting "Edit in Adobe Audition" from the pop-up menu that appears, the originating file in Premiere Pro is automatically updated once you save the edited file in Audition.
