91 Creating Chapter Markers for Encore DVD in Premiere Pro

#91 Creating Chapter Markers for Encore DVD in Premiere Pro

Even if you author in Encore DVD, you should still insert your chapter points in Premiere Pro, where you have a full timeline and waveforms to guide you. Once you import the rendered file into Encore DVD, the inserted chapter markers will automatically appear on the Timeline, exactly as if you created them in Encore DVD. Here's how to create chapter markers for Encore DVD in Premiere Pro.

Be Precise

Type the chapter names entered in step 4 exactly as you'd like to see them appear in your Encore menu. When you link your chapter markers to buttons in Encore DVD, Encore DVD will use this text for the button name , so you if you enter it properly here, you won't have to mess with it again.

1.

In the timeline, drag the current-time indicator to the target location.

2.

Right-click the current-time indicator, and from the pop-up menu that appears, choose Set Sequence Marker > Unnumbered ( Figure 91a ). Premiere Pro will insert the marker in the Time ruler.

Enter the chapter name in the Chapter field. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Chapter Twelve. Producing DVDs in Encore DVD

In many ways, the upgrade from Production Studio 1.5 to 2.0 benefited Encore DVD the most. Not only did Adobe improve the interface, they also enhanced and increased the number of templates, added a slide show feature, and boosted its playlist functionality. Encore's DVD's authoring capabilities extend well beyond Premiere Pro's, allowing you to add customized navigation, a more professional and attractive look, and greater control over your audience's viewing experience to the DVDs you create.

This chapter starts with an introduction to Encore DVD, and then details how to create and enhance menus in Photoshop and After Effects. Next, you'll learn how to control end- user navigation through your DVD, and how to create and use playlists. After reviewing how to manually arrange button routing, the chapter concludes with a checklist for previewing your DVD.

Import Video Files as Timelines

If you've exported one long video file from Premiere Pro to use as your primary content in Encore DVD, import it as a Timeline (File > Import As > Timeline). Encore DVD will create a timeline from the content (saving you a step) and use the file name as the name of the timeline (saving you another step). If you have multiple video files you intend to combine on a single timeline, import them as assets (File > Import As > Assets), create the timeline (right-click in the Project panel and choose New > Timeline), and drag them to that timeline.

1.

Import your content into Encore DVD by choosing File > Import As and the target content type. Navigate to and select your content and click Open .

2.

Create your menus and buttons . Options here include:

  • Import PSD menus created in Photoshop.

  • Choose a template from the Library and modify it for your use.

  • Import a still image as a menu background and add text (from the Toolbox) or buttons (from the Library).

  • Customize text properties in the Character panel.

  • Customize navigational properties (like End Action) in the Properties panel.

Link Chapter Points to Multiple Menus with Chapter Indexes

If your DVD design involves multiple chapter points accessible via sequential chapter menus, you can automate the design and linking process by using Chapter Indexes. See page 140 of the Encore DVD manual for details.
