Glossary


application

A software program you use for a specific purpose. Some apps are built in to your handheld, such as Calendar and Tasks. Others are included on your installation CD, and still others are available for purchase and/or download.



application buttons

Buttons on the lower part of your handheld, each of which opens one of your handheld's applications. The Tungsten E handheld has buttons for Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Note Pad.



beam

To transmit information to another device through your handheld's infrared port.



command

An action you execute on your handheld, such as beaming an entry, deleting an application, or calling up a particular screen.

command stroke

A diagonal stroke made with the stylus, from the lower left to the upper right of the writing area. The command stroke by itself brings up the command toolbar, where you can tap icons to execute commands. The stroke followed quickly by a letter performs a command (/c for copy, /i for information).

conduit

A small program that specifies how (and whether) info is exchanged between your computer and your handheld. Each application has its own conduit, which is listed in the HotSync Custom dialog box.



enter

To input information in any application on your handheld by typing or writing.



entry

An individual set of information within an application, such as an event in Calendar or a person's contact information in Contacts. Also called a record.



expansion card

A stamp-sized storage device that you insert into the slot at the top of your handheld. Expansion cards hold applications, songs, videos, pictures, and other information.



field

A box where you enter information, such as an email address in Contacts or an event description in Calendar.

The method that enables you to enter information and execute commands by writing with your stylus.

Home screen

The main screen on your handheld, where you have access to all of your applications. To get there, tap the Home icon to the left of the writing area or hold down the center navigator button.

input area

menu

Lists of actions you can perform within an application. Use menus to edit information, set preferences, save, delete, beam, and more. In most applications, menus are hidden at the top of the screen. You make them visible by tapping the upper-left corner of the screen or the Menu icon, to the lower left of the writing area.



navigator

The navigator, or five-way navigator, consists of the two large, concentric buttons in the middle of the lower part of your handheld. Press the edges to move up, down, right, or left, and the center button to select items. The navigator works differently in different applications, but it's usually an easy way to move around with one hand.



onscreen keyboard

A small, standard keyboard that appears on the screen when you call it up by tapping ABC in the writing area. Tap the keyboard with your stylus to type.



Palm® Desktop software

The means by which your computer shares information and applications with your handheld. It also lets you enter and edit information on your computer and then transfer it to your handheld. It is installed on your computer from the installation CD, and is often called Palm Desktop.

Palm OS®

The operating system, or basic underlying software, that your handheld uses. Your Palm OS is version 5.2.



pick list

A list of choices found in many applications. See the choices by tapping a downward arrow.



record

screen

The display area of a handheld. The entire screen is touch-sensitive and responds to tapping or drawing by the stylus. Screen can also refer to a particular place within an application, such as the Contact Edit screen in Contacts.



sync, synchronize

To exchange and update information on your handheld and computer, so that your information is the same in both places. You synchronize also to transfer applications to your handheld.

tap

To touch the screen with your stylus to make something happen on your handheld.



view

A particular way an application displays information. Calendar, for example, has Day View, Week View, Month View, and Agenda View. Many applications have a list view that shows you many entries at a glance.



writing area

The area on your handheld below the display section of your screen, where you write letters and execute commands with your stylus. Also called the input area.
