Chapter 4: Oracle Reports 10g

Overview

As the development and deployment requirements of Oracle-based applications have grown increasingly complex, Oracle has responded to the challenge by providing development tools that not only seamlessly integrate with the Oracle database, but also provide development teams with all of the tools necessary to meet the challenges of the intricate development and deployment requirements imposed upon them. One of the most mature and stable development tools of the Oracle Internet Development Suite (iDS) is Oracle Reports 10 g . This tool allows the creation of highly complex reports satisfying virtually every reporting need within an organization.

The goal of Oracle Reports 10 g is to provide the developer with an environment to publish any data in any format, anywhere . This design goal is necessary as modern developers face significant integration issues where homogeneous hardware and software environments are a thing of the past. Oracle Reports 10 g , like all of Oracle s other development tools, fully embraces open standards and gives organizations the flexibility to integrate different types of data and deliver it in all major formats used in modern web deployment. The data sources that can be used include:

  • SQL

  • PL/SQL

  • XML

    • File-based

    • Online (via HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP)

  • Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)

  • Text files

  • Oracle Online Analytical Processing (OLAP)

Oracle also provides an open Java Application Programming Interface (API) for adding additional data sources.
