The Oracle HTTP Server (OHS)

Typically, the Apache-based Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) is the default entry point for all OC4J processes. When a user requests a JSP, it is first handled by OHS. OHS routes request for JSPs to the OC4J process by means of the Apache JServ Protocol (AJP), through the MOD_OC4J component. The MOD_OC4J Apache module is provided with Oracle Application Server 10 g and is configured, by default, to service requests for JSPs. AJP was used instead of HTTP, as it has features that make it faster. MOD_OC4J also supports load balancing, stateless session routing of stateful servlets, and communicates with Oracle Process Monitoring and Notification (OPMN), which can then restart an OC4J instance in the event of a failure.

Note

In addition to MOD_OC4J, Oracle also supplies mod_jserv for the JServ servlet environment. This is mainly provided as a backward compatibility feature as older versions of the application server used this as the primary servlet container.
