  • Access to a CD-ROM drive locally or remotely (through a network).
  • A compatible network interface card (NIC) and the appropriate software.

Server Operating System Requirements

This section describes the minimum server operating system requirements for installing and running the Oracle7 Workgroup Server:

  • Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0, NetWare 3.12 or higher, OS/2 2.1 or 3.0, SCO UNIXWare 2.1, Sun Solaris Intel 2.5, SCO OpenServer 5.0, Sun Solaris SPARC 2.5, HP 9000 Series HP-UX 10.x, or IBM RS 6000 AIX 4.1 or 4.2.
TIP
To avoid a possible server crash or abend (abnormal end) problem, before you install the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for NetWare, you might need to apply the latest NetWare operating system patches from Novell. You might also need to install the latest disk drivers (.DSK) for your disk controller and the latest LAN (.LAN) drivers for the network interface cards (NIC) on your NetWare server. The "Novell Server Library NLM Updates" release notes for the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for NetWare list the required patch files from Novell.
TIP
To install and run the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for HP 9000 Series HP-UX successfully, you need to install the required operating system patches from HP, which are listed in the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for HP 9000 Series 700/800 Installation Guide. You might also need to apply the latest operating system patches, such as PHKL_9366 (data corruption on PA-8000 systems) and PHKL_10459 (System V semaphores, semop(2) patch) for HP-UX 10.20.
TIP
For the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for UNIX, the ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_TERM, PATH, SHELL, and DISPLAY environment variables should be set properly in the .profile or .login file.

Page 112

TIP
Oracle7 Workgroup Server for UNIX has no character-mode installer. The installer automatically runs in Motif mode. You must set your DISPLAY environment variable for C-Shell as
 % setenv DISPLAY <your_ip_address>:0.0
You set your DISPLAY environment variable for Bourne or Korne shell as
 $ DISPLAY= <your_ip_address>:0.0 ; export DISPLAY

TIP
During the installation of the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for IBM RS 6000 AIX 4.1, when you run wgsstart, you might receive an error message with undefined symbols: _XmSetfocusFlag, _XmPopupSpringLoaded, and _XmPopdown. These symbols are missing Motif widgets. Contact IBM to obtain IBM patch PTF U437181, which is an enhancement patch for Motif.
TIP
If you install the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for Intel UNIX and it fails in the relinking phase, you might not have the make utility or the networking software libraries installed on your system. You can verify the make utility by following one of these steps:
  • SCO UNIXWare: Make sure that /usr/bin/make is linked to /opt/oracle/bin/make.
  • SCO OpenServer: Make sure that the make utility is installed in the /bin directory. The make utility is automatically installed with the SCO Development System installation.
  • Sun Solaris Intel: Make sure that the make utility is in the /usr/ccs/bin directory.
TIP
When you relink the Oracle executable from the Oracle7 Workgroup Server for SCO OpenServer, if it hangs on SCO ODT (Open Desktop) 5.0, you might need to obtain a SCO PATCH SLS OSS415A ”the HTFS buffer cache supplement. This patch contains a new HTFS driver, which prevents a deadlock condition that causes SCO ODT 5.0 to hang. You can download this patch from SCO Web site at http://www.sco.com.

Client System Requirements

This section describes the minimum client system requirements for installing and running the client system of the Oracle7 Workgroup Server:

  • Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, or OS/2 2.1 or 3.0.
  • A minimum of 8MB free RAM.
  • A minimum of 30MB free disk space.
  • A CD-ROM drive.
  • A compatible network interface card (NIC) and the appropriate software.
  • A VGA video; SVGA is strongly recommended.
  • Oracle Enterprise Manager: Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0, a minimum of 32MB free RAM, a minimum of 30MB free disk space.

Oracle7 Workgroup Server Tools and Utilities

The Oracle7 Workgroup Server tools and utilities are listed in Table 6.2. Some of the Oracle database user tools and utilities are discussed in Chapter 5, "Personal Oracle7, Oracle Lite." This section introduces the Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Administrator Toolbar, Oracle WebServer Manager, Oracle7 Performance Monitor for Windows NT, Oracle Intelligent Agent, and the Network Manager for Windows. Chapter 15, "Enterprise Manager," discusses the Oracle Enterprise Manager in detail. For a detailed description, refer to your Oracle7 Workgroup Server Getting Started manual, Oracle Enterprise Manager Installation Guide, Oracle Enterprise Manager Administrator's Guide, and the Oracle Database Tools User 's Guide.

Oracle Enterprise Manager

The Oracle Enterprise Manager is a set of graphical database administration tools that allow administrators to manage their databases in the network from a central management console. It is available in both Windows and Web versions. Table 6.2 lists the major components of the Oracle Enterprise Manager. From the Oracle Enterprise Manager console, you can perform database startup and shutdown, tablespace management, security management, database backup and recovery, and import and export. It also enables you to diagnose and tune your databases, schedule jobs, monitor specific event conditions in your network, distribute software, and integrate participating third-party tools. Figure 6.1 shows the Oracle Enterprise Manager console dialog box.

TIP
During the installation of the Oracle Enterprise Manager version 1.3.5, you might receive the following error:
oem10.ins 154 write error while copying file c:\windows\system\oleaut32.new
This error occurs because the oleaut32.dll on your system is newer than the oleaut32.dll that the Installer is trying to write. A workaround is to rename the oleaut32.dll on your system to oleaut32.old and then reinstall the Oracle Enterprise Manager. If the oleaut32.dll file is in use, you cannot rename it. You need to reboot to DOS and rename the file from the DOS prompt.
CAUTION
Oracle does not support partial backup and recovery using the Web-based Backup and Recovery Manager. If you perform a partial database recovery, it might corrupt your database.
TIP
On Windows NT, if you use the NT Backup Manager to back up your database to any tape drive, it might not work. The Windows NT Backup Manager only supports 4mm tape drive backups .
