The Tools Menu

The Tools menu provides an easy way to directly execute all the Designer/2000 application tools. Choosing an option from this menu creates a new session using the same user ID and password that is currently logged on. Each tool consumes much memory; therefore, in PCs with limited RAM, it is better to access the tool directly.

Repository Reports

The Repository Reports module provides a way to run all the predefined Repository reports. The reports are spilt into the following categories:

Data Model reports Database Design reports
Function Model reports Quality reports
Dataflow Model reports User Extensibility reports
BPR Model reports Impact Analysis reports
System Design reports Function Point Analysis reports
Module Design reports Global reports
System Access reports Repository Administration reports

The actual report-definition files are located in your %ORACLE_HOME%\REPADM10\SRW directory. You can copy and customize these reports to meet organizational needs. You can use the reports throughout the entire life cycle of applications and the Repository itself. Reports provide a tool for analyzing requirements and determining additional needs. The reports can become visual proof of progress as well as documentation for nontechnical users who are defining the requirements. If you need additional reports, you can design them by selecting information from the meta-model and customizing the layout. To update the Repository programmatically, you must use the API utility. Suppose that you print a report of all numeric fields that are not right justified. You can set the justification to Right by using an API.

NOTE
Depending on the Repository and application size , these reports may take a while to run.

Summary

The Repository Administration tools are the most important tools available in the Designer/2000 suite, but at times they are the most underused. Beginners often find it easier to grasp concepts by using the other available tools; however, the RON is faster and contains more detail in most cases. It is important to understand that a quality application design effort requires excellent Repository management. Repository management should be an ongoing effort

throughout the life cycle of a project; it provides an excellent means of documenting each item of the database and a faster means for updating forms, reports, and so on through regeneration. A database and its objects, as well as forms and reports, can be reverse engineered into the Repository for documentation or as a starting point for an application upgrade or enhancement. It is a good idea to use Designer/2000 in all your projects.
