  1. You can install Designer/2000 in one of three ways. These methods require different amounts of disk space and take a varying amount of installation time, depending on the number of components you choose to install. Figure 30.6 shows the three options: "interactive mode" or complete installation, installation with default/existing settings, and custom installation or deinstall.

Complete Installation

A complete installation installs all components of Designer/2000, including the option to install SQL*Net products. Oracle is pretty smart. If you have an older version of SQL*Net, it asks whether you want to upgrade. Also, for a custom install or a complete install, you are asked about SQL*Net. To perform a complete installation, choose Complete Install. Follow these steps:

  1. Select the version of SQL*Net you plan to run by selecting the appropriate version. If you do not make a selection for SQL*Net at this point, you can install SQL*Net later by performing a custom installation/deinstallation.
  2. If you chose to install SQL*Net in step 1, you are presented with a list of SQL*Net products to install. Select the proper SQL*Net option and click OK.
  3. The actual install process begins after you choose OK. If you have a previous version of Designer/2000, you might be asked whether you want to rename the old files (previous versions of a new file) or simply overwrite them. Always select the option to rename the previous files, if sufficient disk space is available.
  4. Certain Oracle files, called executables, are stored in a special area, as defined by <Oracle Home>\BIN. Each additional component of Designer/2000 should have its own specific subdirectory. This setup enables you to easily implement patches and upgrades. You then are prompted to enter the location where the common Designer/2000 files should reside.
  5. Because Oracle applications being developed in Designer/2000 can take advantage of OLE2, some of your Windows system files might need to be updated. You are asked whether you want Oracle Installer to update these files. You should not encounter any problems when you upgrade to newer versions of these files. Choose Yes to continue.
WARNING
You cannot remove these files by using the Deinstall utility. After these files are installed, you have to manually remove them.
You next are prompted for the location of SQL*Plus. This is where the SQL*Plus files and future versions of SQL*Plus will reside. Change the value displayed, or accept the default.

  1. In the next screen, you specify where the Developer/2000 Forms runtime files should be located. Change the value displayed, or accept the default.
  2. You now will resolve the location of the Developer/2000 Reports runtime files. Change the value displayed, or accept the default.
  3. Specify the location of the Designer/2000 Repository Administrator files. Change the value displayed, or accept the default.
  4. . A single client should be assigned to initiate and configure the Oracle Repository on Oracle Server. Next, you will need to decide if the machine you're using for this installation will also be the designated PC for the repository. Make the appropriate selection and continue.
CAUTION
If you select the client, you'll need an additional 10MB of disk space for additional files.
  1. Specify where the Designer/2000 Systems Designer files and the Designer/2000 Reports Generator files, and the Server Generator files will reside. Change the values displayed in each screen, or accept the default.
  2. Oracle Installer next prompts you for the location of the Designer/2000 Forms Generator files, the Process Modeller files, and the Systems Modeller files. Change the value displayed for each screen, or accept the default.
  3. Oracle Installer now shows you all the products you have selected for installation, or if you selected items that are newer than existing files on your machine, you will see a screen for information on which files to add or update. All the selected, available components then are copied to their selected destinations.
TIP
Take a minute to write down the information displayed ” especially the version numbers associated with each component. If you ever need to call Oracle support, they will need this information to serve you better and assist you with any problems you encounter.
  1. Oracle Installer now lists any additional files it has determined that it needs to install. Once again, take a minute to record this information for future reference. After you record this information, continue the installation process.

Oracle Installer computes the disk space requirements and makes sure that sufficient space is available on the destination drive. After space requirements are met, the actual components are copied to the destination drive. Oracle Installer displays a progress indicator and updates the progress while files are being copied. After the progress indicator reaches 100 percent, the

installation of Designer/2000 for the client is complete. Proceed to the section "Server Installation," later in this chapter, to complete the necessary steps on the Designer/2000 server.

Default Installation

When you install Designer/2000, most sites select default installation. The main difference between a custom installation (described previously) and a default installation is your capability to change the location of the Designer/2000 files. This process copies a default configuration, complete with default file locations. For the default installation, follow these steps:

  1. Select the version of SQL*Net you plan to run by selecting the appropriate version. If you do not make a selection for SQL*Net now, you can install SQL*Net later by performing a custom installation/deinstallation.
  2. If you chose to install SQL*Net in step 1, you are presented with a list of SQL*Net products to install. Select the proper SQL*Net option.
  3. Because Oracle applications being developed in Designer/2000 can take advantage of OLE2, some of your Windows system files might need to be updated. You are asked whether you want Oracle Installer to update these files. You should not encounter any problems when you upgrade to newer versions of these files. Choose Yes and continue.
WARNING
You cannot remove these files by using the Deinstall utility. After they are installed, you have to manually remove the files.

TIP
Take a minute to write down the information displayed ”especially the version numbers associated with each component. If you ever need to call Oracle support, they will need this information to serve you better and assist you with any problems you encounter.
  1. Any additional files that Oracle Installer has determined need to be installed now are listed. Once again, take a minute to record this information for future reference.
