Introduction

You probably have several business cards in your wallet, receive newsletters in the mail, and pick up the occasional flyer. The effectiveness of these pieces depends on their ability to catch your eye, hold your interest, and efficiently convey their message. Because you can use Microsoft Publisher 2002 to quickly and easily create publications that meet all these criteria, Publisher is rapidly becoming the preferred desktop publishing software for small to medium- sized businesses and organizations, as well as individuals.

How do you generate publications that will look attractive and get the word out about your company or organization, about your product or service, or about an upcoming event? You could hire a professional designer to guide you and do most of the work. But suppose you don t have the budget. You need to be able to create functional, good-looking pieces yourself. That s where a sophisticated desktop-publishing package like Publisher comes in.

With Publisher, you can concentrate on the message of a publication and let the program handle many of the aesthetic details. Publisher can help with virtually every facet of creating a publication so that you can easily produce professional-quality documents. At the same time, Publisher allows you to tailor components to your own needs and tastes; you re never constrained by the program s idea of what a publication should look like.

Publisher s tools work much the same way as the tools in other Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook. Because many people are already familiar with these applications, they find Publisher easy to learn. But even if you ve never worked with any Microsoft Office program before, great care has gone into making Publisher as intuitive as possible.

In this course, we focus on Publisher s most useful features ” the ones most people will use most often and the ones more people would use if they knew how. By the time you finish this Quick Course, you ll have a firm understanding of the components of Publisher, and you ll know enough to experiment on your own with features we don t cover in detail. Specifically , you will know how to:

  • Create simple publications

  • Develop more complex publications

  • Add visual elements

  • Design longer publications

  • Create custom templates

  • Use advanced printing and publishing techniques

Because adequate planning and a basic knowledge of good design are essential for successful publications, we weave these topics into the chapters where appropriate.

In this course, you are asked to assume that you are in charge of creating promotional materials for a company called Adventure Works, which offers tours of the Mojave Desert. Although we focus on how to use Publisher to produce simple but effective publications specifically for Adventure Works, you will easily be able to adapt these examples to your needs. To accomplish its purpose, this course walks you through procedures one step at a time. But we don t take a simple do this, do that approach, because when you ve finished the course, we want you to be able to apply what you ve learned to your own work. So we explain how you need to set things up and why, what s going on at each step, and what the results will be. And we include lots of screen shots to that you can check your work in progress.

We wrote this course using a computer running Microsoft Windows XP with the screen resolution set to 800x600. If you are using a different version of Windows or a different resolution, the appearance of your screen might not match ours exactly. We also used the Publisher configuration that results when you do a Typical installation of Microsoft Office XP Premium Edition from the CD-ROM. Don t be alarmed if your setup is different from ours; you will still be able to follow along with most of the examples in this course.

We don t go into detail about installing Publisher on your computer, assuming that the program has already been installed either separately or as part of the Office XP package. We also assume that you have experience working with Windows (98, 2000, Me, XP, or later) and that you know how to start programs, move windows, click commands on menus , highlight text, and so on. If you are new to Windows, we suggest you take a look at the appropriate edition of Quick Course in Microsoft Windows , which will help you come up to speed. Finally, we assume you are using a mouse. You can perform many Publisher functions using the keyboard, but a mouse is required for some tasks .

The step-by-step instructions in the course tutorial are self contained, meaning that you create the files you need as you go along. No additional files are necessary. The exercises indicate items you should click and keys you should press by showing them in bold type. If we want you to press two keys simultaneously , we show the keys one after the other, separated by a plus sign ”for example, Ctrl+N. Anything you should type is shown in bold italic type.

With that brief orientation out of the way, let s start learning how to use Publisher!
