Working with Template Tables

When you first created the Adventure Works brochure, you based it on the Price List Brochure design. The price list brochure template includes ready-made tables with placeholders that you can replace to quickly create a price list. Tables might not be as exciting as fancy text and graphics, but they are an important visual element that you can use to lay out information in an easy-to-understand format. In this topic, you learn how to fill in a template table and how to modify a table to meet a specific need.

Modifying a Table Title

Let s start by modifying the Price List table title found on the brochure s second page:

1. Move to page 2 of the brochure, and scroll the top of the middle panel (which contains the Price List table and its title) into view.

2. Click an insertion point to the left of the Price List title placeholder, and type the word Tour , followed by a space.

3. Press End to move to the right end of the title, press Enter , and type (Rates are per person) , making sure to include the parentheses.

4. Select the second line of the title, and change its font size to 9 .

Modifying Table Text

The table in the middle panel of the brochure has two columns and eight rows. The intersection of each column and row, called a cell , is a field that can contain an item of information. In this exercise, you ll add information to the table s cells , using an easy method to move from cell to cell. Try this:

1. Click once in a blank area of the first List your product or service here frame.

Publisher s ScreenTips feature indicates that you are now working in a table frame, as shown in this graphic:

2. In the first cell, select the List your product or service here placeholder text, and type Two-Hour Mojave Desert Highlights Tour .

Notice that as you reach the right edge of the cell, the text automatically wraps to the next line.

3. Select the description placeholder text, and press the Delete key to remove it.

4. To move to the next cell in the same row of the table, press the Tab key.

Publisher highlights the price placeholder.

5. Type $45.00, and press Tab to move to the first cell of the second row.

6. Continue filling in the price list by typing the entries shown in the following table, pressing Tab to move from cell to cell.

Half-Day Joshua Tree National Park Tour $55.00
Half-Day Old Woman Mountains Tour $65.00
Half-Day Turtle Mountains Tour $65.00
Full-Day Providence Mountains Tour $95.00
Week-Long Death Valley National Park Tour $495.00
Week-Long Mojave Desert Fossil Dig Tour $610.00

Pressing Shift+Tab moves the insertion point to the previous cell, and you can also use the Arrow keys and the mouse to move around.

Rebreaking Lines in a Table

Publisher breaks lines in table cells to suit the width of the cell, not the sense of the cell entry. You might want to rebreak the lines in some of the cells to make their text easier to read.

Follow these steps:

1. In the first cell of the first row, click an insertion point to the left of the word Highlights , and press Shift+Enter.

Publisher moves the entire word to the second line.

2 In the first cell of the second row, click an insertion point to the left of the word National , and press Shift+Enter.

3. Repeat the previous step to move the word Mountains to the second line in the third, fourth, and fifth rows.

4. Use this line-breaking technique to move National in the sixth row and Fossil in the seventh row to their respective second lines.

5. Click anywhere outside the table.

The results are shown in this graphic:

Deleting a Table Row

You don t need the last row in the price list table. Here s how to delete it:

1. Click the table to select it.

2. Point to the very edge of the table frame to the left of the last row, and when the pointer changes to a black sideways arrow, click once to select the row.

3. Click Delete and then Rows on the Table menu.

Formatting a Table Column

As you can see, the font of the entries in the first row of the table doesn t match the font in the rest of the brochure. You can change the font in the entire column, by following a couple of easy steps:

1. Click anywhere inside the list of tours , and click Select and then Column on the Table menu to select the entire column.

2. Change the font of the entire column s text by clicking the down arrow to the right of the Font box and clicking Arial Black .

Deleting a Table

You want only one table in the brochure, so you need to delete the table on the third panel. When you delete an element that occupies as much space as this table, you need to fill the space with something else, to avoid disrupting the design. In this case, you will use a title from the first panel of the brochure and a text paragraph from the flyer you created in Chapter 2. Follow these steps:

1. With the right panel in view, click the table s frame to select it, right-click the frame, and click Delete Object on the shortcut menu.

2. Scroll the left panel into view, click the More About Our Tours frame to select it, and click the Copy button on the Standard toolbar.

3. Scroll back to the third panel, click the Paste button, and move the title s frame so that it top-aligns with the frame of the table s title in the second panel.

4. Select the title text, type Unbeatable Offer , and then widen the frame.
