Using Task Panes to Make Design Changes

You ve seen how to simplify the task of creating a publication by using one of Publisher s wizards. Obviously, adding text is easier when the text frames for all the elements are already in place. But what if you decide you don t like the design or color scheme you chose? Do you have to start all over again?

No ”in fact, it s easy to change your publication s design. You simply use options in the Publication Designs and Color Schemes task panes. In this topic, we work with those task panes to really make your postcard shine .

Changing the Basic Design

Suppose you ve decided that the Tilt design doesn t quite fit the image you want for Adventure Works. Let s open a task pane and look for something more appropriate:

1. With the postcard displayed on your screen, click Task Pane on the View menu.

2. Click the down arrow on the task pane s title bar, and then click Publication Designs in the drop-down list.

The Publication Designs task pane appears to the left of the postcard, as shown in this graphic:

If necessary, scroll the postcard into view as we ve done.

3. In the Apply a design area, scroll through the design thumbnails so that you can get a feel for all the designs that are available for a postcard publication. When you re finished browsing, click the Blocks thumbnail.

Note the results in the pane on the right. The design has changed, but the color scheme remains intact.

4. The Blocks design doesn t really fit the tone you want for a company providing a service to tourists, so experiment with some of the other design templates.

5. When you have finished experimenting, point to the first Waves thumbnail in the Apply a design area, pause to ensure that its associated ScreenTip reads Waves Informational Postcard , and then click this Waves design.

If you click a Waves design other than Waves Informational Postcard ”for example, Waves Special Offer Postcard ” Publisher might delete some of the information on the postcard to accommodate the design type. For the design you just chose, Publisher has to adjust some frame sizes so that the text will fit. If it could not adjust the frames sufficiently, Publisher would display a Text in Overflow indicator at the bottom of the frame to warn you that some of the text is hidden in an overflow area .

The results are shown in this graphic:

Resetting a design

If you don t like a change you have made to a design, you can restore the original settings. First display the Publication Designs task pane for the open publication and click the Reset current design link at the bottom of the task pane. Publisher displays the Reset Design dialog box, in which you can select check boxes to reset the original formatting of text and objects, restore deleted objects and pages, and reestablish the original page setup and layout. You can also remove objects and pages you have added and restore text and pictures you have changed. To reset all of the design changes you ve made for the publication, select the All of the above check box. Click OK when you are finished.

Changing the Color Scheme

If you are going to print your publication in color, you need to carefully consider its color scheme. Choosing colors that are appropriate for the message you want to send is extremely important. If you understand how colors work together and how they affect your audience, you will probably have no trouble devising your own color schemes. The rest of us can be thankful that Publisher provides a number of preset color schemes to choose from.

Although the Desert color scheme seemed appropriate when you chose it earlier, the heavy brown theme doesn t suit a fun tourist activity. Let s use the Color Schemes task pane to find a livelier scheme:

1. In the upper area of the task pane, click Color Schemes to display the Color Schemes task pane.

2. Scroll through the Apply a color scheme list, and select any color schemes that catch your eye, noting their effects on the postcard in the work pane on the right.

3. When you finish experimenting, click Tropics .

4. Click the task pane s Close button to close the task pane and get a better look at the postcard s new colors.

The Tropics scheme includes colors you might associate with the desert, but the scheme is more vibrant than Desert.

5. Save your work.
