Computer Crime Statistics

An excellent reference source for computer crimes statistics is the Computer Security Institute web site, located at www.gocsi.com . The site has links to their annual computer crime survey that they conduct with the FBI s National Infrastructure Protection Center (NICP). The NICP is a partnership between industry and multiple federal agencies and intended to be a primary organization for responding to computerized crimes and attacks targeted against the nation s operational infrastructure, including airports, highways, telecommunications networks and government buildings .

The annual survey, downloadable for free from CSI, provides illuminating information on ” among other findings ” the types of computer crimes committed, possible sources, when they and who they are reported to, and the value of the loss. The survey is conducted every year and published in late March, early April. When published, the report has often become a media source for predicting computer crime trends and prevention techniques, measuring increases in crime occurence from year-to-year, and projecting financial losses should security countermeasures not succeed.
