Vulnerabilities and Threats

In layman terms, vulnerability is a shortcoming in the hardware or software of a computer or network system or a portal of entry into a computer or network system. Vulnerabilities are actually required to facilitate communication between two or more computers. If you communicate with another computer, you are ultimately making some type of change on the other computer system. While this action is desirable, it can also be exploited.

If vulnerability is exploited, it is a threat to the computer system or network. A threat is also a person or malicious computer system that seeks to cause harm to another computer system or network.

While there will always be vulnerabilities in computer systems and networks, there may not always be a threat. It is important to note that what may not be a vulnerability or threat at this time may not hold true in the future. Later in time, a once nonexistent vulnerability may suddenly emerge as a threat, especially as new technologies such as hardware and software upgrades are added to networked systems.
