Defining Customer Provided Information

What is customer provided information? Customer provided information is all information that the organization gains by any interaction with an existing or potential customer, as well as information on a customer that has been provided by an outside source. A partial list of this information may include: name , social security information, telephone number, address, age, sex, marital status, race, ethnicity , education, credit information, salary, family information, and employment data.

Numerous organizations maintain this type of information; for instance, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stores a tremendous quantity of information on their customers (taxpayers). The IRS obtains this information from employers . Although the IRS may not have obtained this information directly from the customer, it has a responsibility to protect the information.
