Appendix D. Performance Counter Quick Reference

I l @ ve RuBoard

This appendix covers a common set of performance counters that can be useful for various types of applications. You'll invariably use a combination of these to achieve your goals. Keep in mind that no single performance counter will give you a complete picture of your application. Many of these counters must be used in combination to give you a clear picture of what is actually happening. Also note that some problems can never be clarified by performance counters.

You can find definitions of all of these counters in Appendix C. This appendix highlights the subset of counters that are of interest to various types of applications. There is a definite overlap, but it is important to know where to start monitoring your applications. Remember that this list is by no means definitive ”it's just a starting point for your own work.

More Info

You can always create your own performance counters to help you debug your applications. See Chapter 12 for more information.
