Identifying Installation Problems

There are three general problems you may experience during an installation. The first problem stems from a lack of connectivity, the second stems from failing hardware, and the third stems from an issue with configuration.

Issues of connectivity

Connectivity issues are usually caused by problems with the physical wiring. If the wiring doesn’t run without any gaps from your long-distance carrier
(on a long-distance circuit), through your local carrier, and end up in your building, you will have a problem. There may be a dozen points between your carrier and your phone system where the wiring is cross-connected onto new circuits or through new hardware. If any of those connections were not completed, you will have an opening on your circuit. It is as if you have a broken water line. You may have good pipes at your home, and they have good pipes leaving the water company, but somewhere in the middle, things aren’t connected.

Connectivity issues affect the entire circuit. If your T-1 is not cross-connected somewhere in the system, your carrier will not be able to detect your hardware, and you will not be able to see them either.

Issues of hardware failure

If a piece of hardware is failing somewhere in the system, you will be able to see your carrier, and they will be able to see you, but there will be errors on the circuit. These errors may result in you hearing static on all of your calls, the calls may disconnect prematurely, or you may not be able to complete a call. Fortunately, the same troubleshooting for continuity also works to isolate issues where someone’s hardware is generating errors.

Configuration issues

Configuration issues are simple for a competent vendor to detect. As long as you are configured the same as your carrier, everything should work fine. The problem comes in when you have a vendor that does not know your hardware. If you ordered your circuit as B8ZS/ESF Loopstart, and your hardware vendor cannot confirm that your Newbridge 3624 Mainstreet (or whatever hardware you have) is configured that way, you need a new hardware vendor. If your technician is nice, he or she will slowly change all the settings to see what works for your channel bank, but that may take hours to reconfigure for each protocol. To avoid configuration issues, ensure that your hardware vendor can positively confirm all aspects of your hardware and change them if necessary.
