When deployed as a broadband IP network solution, 802.11b will enable an improved standard of living in the form of telecommuting, lower real-estate prices, and improved quality of life. A wave of opportunity for wireless applications is in the making. Most of it lies in the form of broadband deployment. The potential for better living through telecommunications lies largely with the ubiquitous availability of broadband.

Only approximately 9 percent of American households have access to broadband Internet. Incumbent service providers have failed to expand that figure given the cost of their wired infrastructure and right-of-way legal barriers.
