Citrix clients control all access to the Citrix server from the local desktop. This alone makes them an important part of the Citrix environment. Like any desktop software, care and planning needs to go into a Citrix client rollout. The needs of the organization and the capacity of the network require study before clients are installed on the network. The deployment methods for the Win32 client, for example, can put tremendous strain on the network if not planned in advance. Multiple users all connecting to a shared drive and installing software at the same time can cause many networks to groan under the strain.

As we've seen, most computer platforms are covered by one of the Citrix clients. The Unix and Macintosh clients allow Windows applications to be run on their desktop without the need for different binaries or server configurations. They can run the same applications that Windows users are running at the same time. All of the clients can be configured to replace the local desktop if need be. The user still has access to their printers, drives, and COM ports, but everything is on the server. This allows more control for the administrator and lower support costs.

The Citrix client is the user's view of the Citrix server. It is what the user interacts with on their desktop. Proper planning and care when deploying the client will allow a smooth user experience.
