MetaFrame XP is a major advance in thin client technology. Citrix has taken all the feedback from partners and customers and enhanced MetaFrame to include the most sought-after features. These features make MetaFrame XP more scalable and more stable, while still maintaining full compatibility with existing MetaFrame 1.8 installations.

MetaFrame XP adds the Independent Management Architecture and the Citrix Management Console to enhance the administrator's ability to monitor and control the operation of farms from a central location. The CMC consolidates several legacy management applications into one easy-to-use application that can run on workstations as well as MetaFrame servers.

Citrix's concept of hardware independence presents new possibilities in providing access to business applications. Eventually, users will be accessing corporate data from holographic projections of a terminal from their wrist watch. When they do, Citrix will be there to maximize the ability of that mobile processor while minimizing the amount of bandwidth required. For now, users are free to use Windows-, Unix-, Linux-, and Java-based platforms (as well as others), to access business applications.

MetaFrame XP introduces a new paradigm of licensing. We don't have to buy a license for each server with a few user licenses, and then add bump packs. Load balancing, resource management, and installation services are no longer add-on products. Licensing now supports an unlimited amount of servers, allowing us to only pay for the users' licenses. Add-on products are bundled into one of the three target solutions and factored into the per user price. XPs provides base functionality for small scale deployments. XPa is the ideal for mid-size farms that need load balancing but not installation services or network management. XPe includes all the Citrix products in one complete solution.
