Chapter Review Questions

You can find the answers to the following questions in Appendix A, "Answers to Chapter Review Questions."

1:

How many frames can pass through a 24-port hub at one instance in time, with no collisions occurring?

2:

How many frames can pass through a 24-port switch at one instance in time, with no collisions occurring, and with full duplex used on all ports?

3:

PC1, PC2, and PC3 are all attached to the same switch. Imagine that PC1 and PC2 each send a frame to PC3, at roughly the same instance in time. Will the switch forward both frames? Will a collision occur? Why or why not?

4:

PC1, PC2, and PC3 are all attached to the same switch. PC1 and PC2 use full duplex, and PC3 uses half duplex. Can PC1 send a frame to PC2 while PC2 sends a frame to PC3? Why or why not?

5:

PC1, PC2, and PC3 are all attached to the same switch, but the switch is powered off. After the switch is powered up, PC1 sends a frame to PC2. How many MAC addresses are in the MAC address table of the switch? Why?

6:

Imagine that three PCs (PC1, PC2, and PC3) are connected to a switch. PC2 and PC3 have 10/100 NICs, and PC1 has a 10-Mbps only NIC. Could any PC use 802.3u?

7:

Imagine that three PCs (PC1, PC2, and PC3) are connected to a switch. PC2 and PC3 have 10/100 NICs, and PC1 has a 10-Mbps only NIC. What would need to happen before PC2 could transmit at 100 Mbps?

8:

If a frame with a destination MAC address of 0200.6666.6666 arrived at a switch, and the switch had the following two entries in its switching table, what would the switch do? Out which ports would the switch forward the frame? Out which ports would the switch not forward the frame?

9:

If a frame with a destination MAC address of 0200.7777.7777 arrived at a switch, and the switch had only the following two entries in its switching table, what would the switch do? Out which ports would it forward the frame? Out which ports would it not forward the frame?

10:

If a frame with a destination MAC address of FFFF.FFFF.FFFF arrived at a switch, and the switch had only the following two entries in its switching table, what would the switch do? Out which ports would it forward the frame? Out which ports would it not forward the frame?

11:

What does the word "flooding" mean in the context of LAN switch operation?

12:

What is the most significant difference between Ethernet and Fast Ethernet?

13:

How many more bytes did the IEEE add to the address field in the Fast Ethernet header, as compared to Ethernet, when it created the Fast Ethernet standards?

14:

How many more bytes did the IEEE add to the address field in the Gigabit Ethernet header, as compared to Ethernet, when it created the Gigabit Ethernet standards?

15:

List the differences in the forwarding and learning logic used by a 10 Mbps Ethernet switch and a gigabit Ethernet switch.
