Chapter 7. Troubleshooting the Physical Layer

Terms you'll need to understand:

  • bandwidth

  • buffer

  • Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)

  • collision

  • cyclic redundancy check (CRC)

  • Network Management Systems (NMS)

  • optical time domain reflector (OTDR)

Techniques you'll need to master:

  • Know the show commands that can be used to view the configuration, and to monitor and view the statistics of Cisco interfaces.

  • Understand the need for Network Monitoring Systems.

  • Know what SNMP is and how it works with Network Monitoring Systems.

  • Know the different types of cable testers and how they can help you resolve Physical layer problems.

  • Know Cisco Discovery Protocol and how it can help you in troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting at the Physical layer is one of the most important parts of network troubleshooting. If your network is properly configured and stops working without any notice, most likely it will relate to a hardware issue, an issue with the physical layer cabling, or an issue with the interfaces the physical cabling connects to.

In this chapter, you learn how to utilize tools and commands that can help you identify problems with a Cisco router or switch, network cabling, or other network problems affecting the Physical layer of the network. When you are done with this chapter you should have a good knowledge of the basics of troubleshooting the network's Physical layer. These basics include using the show commands, physical tools (such as cable testers), management system software, and protocol analyzers (sniffers).
