winipcfg CommandThe winipcfg command used on Windows 95 and 98 clients is similar to the ipconfig command. With the winipcfg command, however, you get to see the DHCP information configured on the host in a GUI form, as shown in Figure 5.1. Figure 5.1. The winipcfg command GUI.
The initial screen gives you the MAC address of the adapter, the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and the adapter type. If you choose the More Info button, you can see a more complete list of the advanced settings, including the DNS and WINS server configured and other advanced DHCP settings. The More Info screen is shown in Figure 5.2. Figure 5.2. The advanced DHCP configuration information shown by using the More Info button.
Three elements need to be verified when troubleshooting TCP/IP problems in Windows 95/98: the host, the router, and the server. If you have network connectivity and you can ping the default gateway but you cannot resolve an FQDN, then you should verify your DNS server settings (you learn more about pinging in the next section of this chapter).
The remainder of buttons at the bottom of the GUI allow you to release or renew your DHCP settings. |
