The Ideal CCNP Candidate

Just to give you some idea of what an ideal CCNP candidate is like, here are some relevant statistics about the background and experience such an individual might have. Don't worry if you don't meet these qualifications (or, indeed, if you don't even come close) because this world is far from ideal. Where your qualifications fall short, simply be aware that you have more work to do.

That said, the ideal candidate for the 642-831 certification exam will have the following:

  • Professional or academic training in network theory, concepts, and operations. This training includes areas such as networking media, Cisco switch and router configuration, troubleshooting, LAN and WAN transmission techniques, networking terminology, networking protocols, network operating systems, services, and applications.

  • Three-plus years of professional networking experience, including experience with Ethernet, token ring, modems, and other networking media. This experience must include installation, configuration, upgrades, and troubleshooting experience.

  • A good knowledge of the OSI Reference model, IPX suite of protocols, and the TCP/IP suite of protocols. This knowledge should include a thorough understanding of name resolution and subnetting.

The length of time needed to prepare for the exam can always be decreased by a good instructor, mentor, and a good self-learner. The preceding qualifications may seem overwhelming, but there have been many people before you who have overcome the challenge. You can too.
