Select the text you want to move.

Click Edit , and then click the Cut command. Windows deletes the data from the document and places it in the Clipboard.

Click in the document where you want to place the text.

INTRODUCTION

Just as you can copy text, you can move text from one location in a document to another location in the same document. You can also move text from one document to another. Moving text is similar to copying text, except that when you move something it is deleted from its original location.

TIP

Move to Another Application

To move cut or copied data from WordPad to another application, simply switch to the desired application, click the spot where you want the data to be placed, open the Edit menu, and select Paste .

Click Edit and then select the Paste command.

The text is pasted into the new location.

TIP

Undo a Move

You can undo a paste operation if you change your mind after performing the action. Simply click Edit , and then select the Undo Paste command to remove the text you just pasted.

TIP

Shortcuts

WordPad includes toolbar buttons and keyboard shortcuts for Cut, Copy, and Paste operations. The keyboard shortcuts are Ctrl+X (Cut), Ctrl+C (Copy), and Ctrl+V (Paste).


Task 9: Formatting Text

Select the text you want to change.

To use a different font, click the Font drop-down arrow and click the font you want.

To use a different font size, select the text you want to change, click the Font Size drop-down arrow, and click the size you want to use.

INTRODUCTION

You can easily make simple changes to the appearance of the text. For example, you can change the font or font size, and you can make text bold, italic, or underlined . This task touches on just a few of the formatting changes you can make. Experiment to try out some of the other available formatting features.

TIP

Undoing a Change

To undo a change, click the Undo button on the toolbar. The Undo button is the one with a curved arrow pointing to the left.

To make text bold, italic, or underlined, select the text, and then click the appropriate button in the format bar.

To change the font color , select the text you want to change, and then click the Font Color button. Select the color you want from the drop-down list that appears.

Change the alignment of a paragraph by selecting it and clicking any of the Alignment buttons on the toolbar.

TIP

Using the Format Menu

You can use the commands in the Format menu to change the appearance of your document. Included on the Format menu are commands to set the font, the bullet style, the paragraph style and the tabs.

TIP

Other WordPad Options

You can also use commands in WordPad's Insert menu to insert the date and time or objects, such as a chart or picture.


Task 10: Using Notepad

Click Start, All Programs, Accessories , and then choose Notepad .

To open a file in Notepad, click File , and then choose Open .

An Open dialog box appears. Navigate to the folder containing the file you want to open.

INTRODUCTION

The most common type of simple file is a text file, which has the extension .txt. They include instructions on how to install a program, beta notes, and other information. Some configuration files are also text files. To edit and work with this type of file, you can use Notepad, a simple text editor provided with Windows XP.

TIP

NotePad Versus WordPad

NotePad is similar to WordPad, in that both are text-editing programs. WordPad, however, supports more formatting options and other features whereas NotePad does not.

Navigate the Open Dialog Box

For help navigating the standard Windows Open dialog, refer to Task 6, "Opening a Document," in Part 2, "Working with Programs."

When you find the file you want to read, double-click its entry in the Open dialog box.

Review the file.

To exit Notepad, click the Close button.

TIP

Use Scrollbars

Depending on the length of the document, you may need to use the scrollbars to the right of and below the document window. Simply drag the box in the scrollbar up or down depending on your needs.

TIP

Save Text Files

If you want to make changes to the file, do so. Save the changes by opening the File menu and choosing Save .

WARNING!

Be careful when making changes to any configuration text file. Be sure you know exactly what you are doing.
