Sending a Fax

After the Fax Console is set up, you can use it to send and receive faxes. To help you create and send a fax, Windows XP provides a Send Fax Wizard. This wizard leads you through the steps for creating and sending a fax cover page. You can also send a fax from within a program. For instance, you may want to fax a document you created in Word. To fax within another program, you "print" to the fax. This section covers both these methods for sending a fax.

Sending a Fax with the Send Fax Wizard

To send a fax using the wizard, follow these steps:

1.

If the Fax Console is not open, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Fax, and finally Send Fax Wizard.

If the Fax Console is open, click File and then click the Send a Fax command. Both start the Send Fax Wizard.

2.

Click Next to move from the welcome screen to the first step.

3.

Enter the name and fax number of the recipient (see Figure 10.4). Click Next.

4.

If you want to use a different cover page template, display the template drop-down list and select the template you want. You'll see a thumbnail sample of the cover sheet to help you decide which is most appropriate.

5.

Type a subject and the note for the fax cover sheet (see Figure 10.5). Click Next.

6.

Select when to send the fax, as well as the fax priority (see Figure 10.6). Click Next.

7.

Click Finish. After completing these steps, the fax is sent at the time you selected in step 6.

Faxing from a Program

You can also fax documents created in Windows programs by "printing" to the fax; the program uses the fax modem you have set up with the configuration wizard. This method starts the Send Fax Wizard, but faxes all the pages in the document.

To fax a document from a program, follow these steps:

1.

Open the document you want to fax.

2.

Click File and then click the Print command. You'll see the Print dialog box.

3.

Display the printer drop-down list and select Fax (see Figure 10.7).

4.

Click the OK button. This starts the Send Fax Wizard. Follow the same steps as covered in the preceding section. That is, complete the recipient and other information for the fax, clicking Next to complete each step in the fax wizard. The document is then faxed to that recipient.

tip

You can also access and send a fax using the Send Fax Wizard from the Printers and Faxes Control Panel. Click Start, Control Panel. Then, click Printers and Other Hardware. Under Pick a Task, click View Installed Printers or Fax Printers. Then, under Printer Tasks, click Send a Fax and follow the steps to complete and send the fax.
