Using Shortcuts for Web Browsing

To help you get to sites quickly, Internet Explorer provides several shortcuts, including using the Favorites list, the History list, and others.

Setting Up a Favorites List

If you find a site that you especially like, you might want a quick way to return to it without having to browse from link to link or having to remember the address. Fortunately, Internet Explorer enables you to build a list of favorite sites and to access those sites by clicking them in the list.

To add a site to your Favorites list, follow these steps:

1.

Display the Web site that you want to add to your list.

2.

Open the Favorites menu and click the Add to Favorites command.

3.

In the Add Favorite dialog box, shown in Figure 8.5, type a name for the page (if you're not satisfied with the default name that is provided).

4.

Click OK.

After you have added a site to your Favorites list, you can go to that site by following these steps:

1.

Click the Favorites button.

tip

Rather than having one long list of favorites, you might organize your list into folders. For instance, you might have a folder for shopping sites, and you might have a folder for sports sites. You can create and select folders when adding favorites by clicking the Create in button.

2.

In the Favorites bar that is displayed (see Figure 8.6), click the site you want to visit. The selected favorite site is displayed in the main window.

3.

Click the Close button in the Favorites bar to close this pane of the window.

Using the History List

In addition to using the Favorites list, you can use the History list to go to a site. If you recently visited a site that you liked but can't remember its address, you can view the History list, which lists the sites and pages you have visited in the last several weeks. From this list, you can find the site you want and click the link to go to that site.

Follow these steps to view and go to a site in the History list:

1.

Click the History button. The History bar is displayed.

tip

You can also display the Favorites menu and select the site from this list. For help with organizing your Favorites list into folders as well as deleting or renaming sites in the list, see Chapter 15.

2.

Click Today to view sites visited today. Otherwise, click one of the weeks you want (last week, two weeks ago, three weeks ago). The list expands to show sites for the time period you selected (see Figure 8.7).

3.

Click the site you want to visit. The list expands again to display pages (if applicable) you have visited at that particular site.

tip

As another shortcut, you can click the down arrow at the far right of the address bar to display a list of sites you have visited by typing the address. You can then click any listed site to go to that site.

4.

Click the specific page at that site. That page is displayed.

5.

Click the Close button to close the History bar.
