PREFACE TO THE NEW EDITION

I'm delighted that Addison-Wesley has chosen to re-issue this book. The origins and evolution of the book are amply described in the prefaces to the first and second editions, and there is nothing I can usefully add to these.

The book originally saw the light of day thanks to Viki Williams, the best editor in the world. Incredibly, eight years later, Viki is back on the case and this edition is once again the result of her hard work and belief. Susan Harrison did such an extraordinarily meticulous job on the preparation of the book for publication that she should really be credited as a co-author . Thanks, Susan.
