Welcome Pages

  • OES Linux Welcome Pages provide an introduction to OES components and links to administrative and user-level tools. You can access these Welcome Pages using a web browser to connect to the IP address or DNS name of the OES Linux server. For example:

    http://www.quills.com

    or

    http:/ /192.168.1.100

ConsoleOne

  • ConsoleOne is a Java-based tool for managing your network and its resources. Although not shipped as part of OES Linux, ConsoleOne for Linux, and several other platforms, it can be downloaded from http://support.novell.com.

  • ConsoleOne is not capable of managing all components of OES Linux. However, some administrative tasks (such as eDirectory administration) can still be performed via ConsoleOne.

iManager

  • iManager provides role-based management of your OES Linux network, together with a nearly comprehensive set of administrative tools. When you've loaded iManager, you will use it to perform most of the day-to-day administrative tasks in your OES environment, including management of most services that are available with OES Linux.

  • You can access the iManager web page by appending the iManager path (/nps/iManager.html) to the IP address or DNS name of the server running iManager. For example:

    https://www.quills.com/nps/iManager.html

    or

    https://192.168.1.100/nps/iManager.html

  • To force iManager into Simple mode to support Federal accessibility guidelines, use the Simple mode path (/nps/Simple.html). For example:

    https://www.quills.com/nps/Simple.html

    or

    https://192.168.1.100/nps/Simple.html

  • You will be prompted to authenticate using a valid eDirectory username. Users can access only the iManager features for which they have been assigned rights.

Novell Remote Manager

  • Novell Remote Manager (NRM) is used for remote management of OES Linux servers.

  • NRM is launched directly by accessing the OES Linux server's domain name or IP address via secure HTTP, followed by a colon and the port number (default is 8009). For example:

    https://www.quills.com:8009

    or

    https://192.168.1.100:8009

  • You will be prompted to authenticate. For access to all NRM features, the user should authenticate as the root user on the local SLES machine.

iMonitor

  • iMonitor is used for web-based management and maintenance of Novell eDirectory in your OES Linux network.

  • Launch iMonitor from iManager by selecting "Repair via iMonitor" under the eDirectory Maintenance group. Alternatively, you can go straight to iMonitor using the following URL:

    https://www.quills.com:8030/nds

    or

    https://192.168.1.100:8030/nds

Throughout Novell's history, several management tools have been employed to provide various aspects of network administration. Some of these tools, such as ConsoleOne, are in widespread use today and still have a purpose in enterprise networks.

With the introduction of OES Linux, Novell has focused its efforts toward enhancing a central management tool originally found on NetWare. This tool is known as iManager. iManager is a web-based management portal into administration of all OES components. iManager offers a true platform-independent management interface that can be used from any workstation at any location to perform network management and maintenance of any kind.

iManager v2.5, which ships with OES, provides a complete set of tools for managing OES Linux. However, some additional advanced administration and maintenance utilities do exist outside of iManager. This chapter provides an introduction to each of these core Novell management utilities. Requirements and installation information for each utility, as well as an overview of features and capabilities of each utility, will be discussed.

Because multiple web-based utilities are available with OES Linux, the central access point for all utilitiesthe OES Linux Welcome Pageswill be explained first. These pages should be the starting point into OES Linux component management.

Next, the chapter mentions ConsoleOne, and describes why this utility is not necessary for OES Linux. (ConsoleOne can still be used for eDirectory-specific management functions.)

Finally, OES Linux's web-based management tools are presented, including iManager, Novell Remote Manager (NRM), and iMonitor. These browser-based utilities collectively provide complete OES component administration, and offer substantial flexibility for network administrators looking to get their jobs done from any place at any time.
