Summary

Project integration management is the most important of the nine knowledge areas in project management, and is the essence of the discipline. It includes the following activities:

  • Creating the project charter.

  • Developing the preliminary scope statement.

  • Developing the project management plan (i.e. the overall plan).

  • Directing and managing the execution of the project.

  • Monitoring and controlling the execution.

  • Integrated change control.

  • Closing the project.

The central theme in project integration management is ensuring that everything in the project happens at the right time, that is, coordination, or in other words again, integration. This requires having a plan and baselines, and a system for identifying and approving necessary changes, and making adjustments to the baselines and amendments to the project plans accordingly. Communication is essential to integration, as without the help and support of others nothing will be achieved. Integration is like juggling, and the more complex the project, the more balls there are to keep in the air. If your eye is taken off the ball for any reason, then everything crashes to the floor, including your career. The project manager must retain focus and attention throughout the project to ensure all activities are assessed, evaluated and implemented correctly. The knowledge area of project management integration exists to help you do this.
