Toward a More Elegant Design

There will always be new technology, but setting your sights too high backfires. Early adopters are a minority. It takes time for mainstream audiences to accept and learn new interactions. Effective interaction designers understand and support people's cognitive and physical abilities, and remain true to their objectives. Technology may change, but people's innate capabilities remain constant.

Careless, ineffective designs are overly adorned. Sophisticated designs are planned, organized, and unpretentious. Truly elegant Web designs are visually pleasing as well as functional. Moreover, function always comes before beauty. What good is a beautiful Web site if people don't have use for it, or it's not navigable? Before you rush out to build the most cutting-edge Web site, you should consider its purpose. What do your users want to achieve? Coming back to the user will help you decide what's best for your site.

There will always be new technology, but early adopters are a minority. It takes time for mainstream audiences to accept and learn new interactions.
