Dedication

This book is dedicated to the loving memories of my mother, Elaine Shapiro, my grandparents Beno and Rose Frank, and my great aunt, Phyllis Koppel.

About the Author

Jeffrey Shapiro, MCSE, MCTS, MCPD, is the author of SQL Server 2000: The Complete Reference as well as 11 other technology books. He is currently working on a variety of SQL Server business intelligence projects for Fortune 100 companies in Orlando, Florida.

Acknowledgments

I have often imagined what it must be like for a sailor, stranded alone on a small yacht in the middle of a giant, angry ocean. Besides the loneliness there is that ever present danger that something will go bump in the night, and your boat will go down with you in it, food for the sharks, or for some giant squid that’s waiting with hungry tentacles,

This book was completed over a period of five and a half months that were spread out over 18 months thanks to Hurricanes Wilma and Katrina in the summer and fall of 2005, and often I felt like that desperate sailor trapped in my lab surrounded by eight SQL Server machines, which at times seemed more like the life-threatening tentacles of that giant calamari lurking beneath the waves, especially when they don’t work when you are out of power,

Fortunately, just as the boat seemed to take on water the lifelines would get thrown out to me, and the one soul that gets to be promoted to admiral is my wife Kim. Without her support, I would not have made it into safe harbor.

As any seafaring person knows, there is always a beacon of light guiding the way, The lighthouse of my life is my son Kevin, who is always there to calm me down enough that I may see the rocks and get through troubled waters, with a smile you hear from ten thousand miles away-beats the foghorn any day.

McGraw-Hill has a very special editing team that has made this book possible, They are led by Editorial Director, Wendy Rinaldi, to whom I am indebted for the opportunity to do this book and be part of McGraw-Hill’s vision for excellence in technical publications.
