JSP.D.4 JSP, XML, and XSL Technologies

The JSP 1.0 and JSP 1.1 specification started in the direction of XML representations of JSP pages. At the time of the design of the JSP 1.0 and JSP 1.1 specifications the Java platform was lacking in APIs for the manipulation of XML documents; this deficiency is being corrected and we expect to exploit the interaction of XML and JSP technologies more fully in future specifications.
