1. Identify precisely what the expectations for the character are. You must define the problem.

2. Analyze and simplify the defined problem into smaller, more manageable, problems. Come up with ideas to solve your problems. When the small questions have been answered , combine the answers to solve the large problem.

3. Choose the best character ideas that you have developed.

4. Draw the character.

5. Look at your resulting drawings. Have others look at your results. Realistically evaluate what you have done.

If you follow these five steps (or some modification of their basic premises), you will almost be guaranteed success as you design your characters .
