16.3 Reconciliation Plan

The reconciliation effort enables stakeholders to compare trade-offs on a conceptual level. Having a focused objective prevents the process from degenerating into confusion or emotional appeals. In the RSS case study, we used the profiles generated by SAM, discussed in Chapter 15, to contrast migration strategies at a conceptual level.

The reconciliation plan includes the following steps.

  1. Assemble the stakeholders as a group and explain the process. This step includes briefing the stakeholders about the approach, reviewing the architecture-transformation choices, and enumerating the uses and limitations of SAM. Stakeholders are assigned the task of defining the order of business object completion.

  2. Conduct separate meetings to construct each group's "ideal" project profile. Participants assemble a plan that satisfies their requirements. SAM is used to create profiles for each plan.

  3. Synthesize the profiles into combined views to demonstrate the impact of compromise. The ideal profiles are combined to demonstrate trade-offs and their impact to the plan.

  4. Reassemble the entire group. The entire group evaluates the results and provides input for the final consensus profile.

  5. Brief the consensus to management. The final consensus profile is provided to the engineers developing the life-cycle cost estimates, as described in Chapter 17.
