Sharing Motion Attributes

 < Day Day Up >

If you are working with a group of images, and you want them to share a common motion attribute such as size, crop, or position, you can adjust the parameters in one clip and copy and paste those attributes to another, just as you did with audio levels.

TIP

Before you perform these steps, review the MB high jump clips at the beginning of the Motion Finished sequence, and return to the Motion Starting sequence.

1.

In the Timeline, drag the playhead toward the head of the sequence and over the middle of the MB high jump clips. Select the clip on the V1 track.

In the Canvas, notice the number 1 over the center point of the wireframe X, indicating the selected clip is on V1.

2.

Move your pointer over this wireframe in the Canvas, and when the pointer changes to the Move pointer, drag the MB high jump clip around in the image area, then release it.

In the previous rotation exercise, the clips at the end of the sequence were already resized so you could see all three together. Here, the clips are full frame, and the uppermost clip takes priority over the clips on the lower tracks. As you drag the wireframe, you are in fact moving the V1 clip, although you see only the wireframe representation of the image move.

To see the changes you make to the V1 clip, you must turn off visibility to the upper two clips. You can do this without turning off visibility to the entire V2 and V3 tracks.

3.

In the Timeline, Ctrl-click the MB high jump on the V3 track, and choose Clip Enable from the shortcut menu. Repeat this process for the MB high jump clip on V2.

Clip Enable turns off visibility for one or more clips without turning it off for the entire track. This is helpful because turning off Visibility for an entire track may cause you to lose render files for other unassociated clips.

TIP

To accomplish the same thing using a different approach, select the V1 clip and choose Sequence > Solo Selected Item, or press Ctrl-S. This approach disables all other clips that overlap the selected clip.

4.

Double-click the V1 MB high jump clip, and in the Motion tab, click the red Reset button in the Basic Motion section to return these parameters to their default settings.

5.

Perform the following motion parameter changes to this clip, either in the Motion tab or directly on the clip in the Canvas. It may take a little tweaking to get the desired result.

  • Move the playhead to the marker in the V1 MB high jump clip.

  • Crop the left and right sides so you see only the racer in the middle of the frame.

  • Crop some of the top and bottom of the image, but don't crop the racer.

  • Scale the image down to allow for two additional racers the same size within the frame.

  • Position the clip toward the left, with a comfortable black margin, staying within the action safe area.

  • In the Timeline, drag the playhead through the clip to ensure the motocross bike is seen throughout the majority of the clip.

6.

Select the V2 and V3 clips. Ctrl-click either one, and choose Clip Enable.

You can toggle Clip Enable for one clip or a group of clips at the same time.

7.

To paste the motion attributes from the V1 MB high jump clip to the V2 and V3 clips, select the V1 clip, and press Cmd-C to copy it. Select the V2 and V3 MB high jump clips, and Ctrl-click either one. Choose Paste Attributes from the shortcut menu.

In the Paste Attributes window, you can select the specific motion parameters you want to paste.

8.

Click the Basic Motion and Crop check boxes, and click OK.

In the Canvas, it appears as though there is only one image. All three images, since they share the V1 clip's attributes, are aligned on top of the V1 clip.

9.

In the Timeline, select the V2 MB high jump clip. In the Canvas, Shift-drag the V2 clip to the right, and release it in the center of the Canvas image area.

10.

In the Timeline, click the V3 MB high jump clip, and in the Canvas, drag it to the right of the center clip. Make any additional adjustments, and play these cliips.

TIP

To fine-tune the position and alignment between these images or the other images in this sequence, click the View pop-up in the Canvas, and choose one of the Checkerboard options from the pop-up menu. When the playhead is stopped, the background changes from its default black to a checkerboard pattern. When the sequence plays, you see the default black behind the images.

Project Practice

To continue practicing with motion parameters, review the MB championship clip in the Motion Finished sequence. This clip was cropped, resized, and repositioned to the upper part of the frame. The lower image was cropped, resized, and positioned, and the aspect ratio of the clip was changed to appear shorter. Make these changes to this clip in the Motion Starting sequence. Save your changes.
