PROCESS IMPROVEMENT - MAKE VERSUS BUY

PROCESS IMPROVEMENT ” MAKE VERSUS BUY

The growth in the model-based process improvement business has given rise to an increase in the number of individuals and companies providing expert consulting in CMM or CMMI implementation process improvement. As of August 2003, there were over 2000 process improvement consulting firms or tool vendors which could easily be found on the Web. There are at least 6 after-market CMMI books available, the authors of which (including this one) would be happy to sell you advice, I m sure. Organizations pursuing CMMI maturity levels spend anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 per employee per year on CMMI-based process improvement work. [41] Major IT outsourcing firms such as SAIC and CSC and major integrated solutions providers such as Accenture market the rapid achievement of CMM and CMMI maturity levels as a significant market differentiator (can t figure that one out since they re all doing it) to secure multimillion dollar contracts.

Choosing the right consultant or solutions provider is difficult and risky and there just isn t much factual information to help you. With hourly rates for process consulting as high as $250 per hour and the cost of recovering from bad advice running that cost up many magnitudes , you can t afford to make too many wrong decisions about acquiring outside expertise.

Although there is no Consulting CMM to use as a guide for your acquisition decisions, there are some factors that will help you reduce your risks with process consultants and vendors. As with most acquisitions, hiring a process consultant or vendor should be based on verifiable and testable selection criteria. So, if your only criteria is to hire the friend of your golfing buddy, then stop here and good luck to you; otherwise , read on! [40]
