Summary

In this chapter you examined how J2EE processes execute within OC4J and how OC4J processes are architected, administered, and monitored . You saw that J2EE processes can execute on the client or database tier, but it's preferable to run them on the mid tier. While on the mid tier , J2EE processes execute as JSPs, Servlets, or EJBs. They run within an OC4J instance, which may be composed of multiple subprocesses and islands to provide fault tolerance and improve performance.

Using the ASC utility, we showed you how to set up and manage OC4J containers. You saw how an instance's properties are configured and managed with various ASC administration pages. You also saw how the ASC LogLoader provides a powerful way to review and search through multiple log files from within one convenient tool. You used the AggreSpy web page to find useful metrics about each component. We introduced dmstool in order to get similar statistics from the command line. Finally, you used the graphical iHat utility to monitor OC4J, OHS, DCM, and LogLoader processes and their performance.
