Rapid Install

 < Day Day Up >

If we look at each of the utilities, roughly, in the order that you would expect to encounter them in an install/upgrade/maintenance situation, the first utility that you encounter is Rapid Install.

You install or upgrade to Apps 11i by means of Rapid Install, which is located on the red CD. When you open the package of installation CDs that come from Oracle, one stands out from all the rest. It is printed in red. In the installation package of a regular database, the red CD contains information that is not critical to the installation of the database. In the Oracle E-Business Suite, this is not the case.

The only means by which you can install or upgrade to 11i is through the installation utility on the red CD, Rapid Install. It was introduced in Apps 11.0 as One Hour Install and renamed in 11i. It was created to package together a certified combination of the technology stack, the Apps code and database version into one central installation package. This packaging was done to simplify the installation, reduce average time to do an installation, and increase customer satisfaction with the product, the procedure, and with the company.

Rapid Install replaces the old utility, Auto Install. That utility has not been done away with, however; it has now been reclassified and renamed Auto Upgrade. Although Auto Upgrade is a central step in the upgrade process from one major release to the next, it cannot be used to perform the upgrade until Rapid Install has been run to create the proper file systems.

Rapid Install can simultaneously install multiple language translations during the initial installation process. This simplifies the process significantly and was not available until Release 11i. This means a faster, cleaner, less problem prone install/upgrade process.

Rapid Install is a Java interface, similar to runInstaller that you would typically use to install an Oracle database. Rapid Install goes farther and installs all of the pieces of Oracle E-Business Suite, including the preseeded database, all licensed and shared products, and the core Application Server functionality. It is a menu-driven interface that gathers information from the person running the installation and uses that information to not only run the installation, but to create a configuration file that can be used later in cloning or for reference to the particular settings for your individual environments.

Regardless of your decision to stage or not stage the other CDs in the installation pack, the red CD (Rapid Install or RapidWiz) has to be staged locally to your system. It should never be run from the CD-ROM.

Rapid Install is an X Windows-based utility, much like runInstaller, and cannot be run in character mode. It also requires that you set your DISPLAY environment variable to a value that is valid for running an X Windows session and it would be good to set your TERM and your TEMP environment variables at the same time (see Table 8.2 for an example on how to do this). To determine if the workstation you are intending to run your installation session on is set up in your system to run an X Windows session, you can type xclock at a command prompt while sitting at that workstation. If a small window containing a clock appears on the display of the workstation, you can safely assume that you can run X Windows utilities from your location. If you are in a Motif environment, run the xhost + command.

RapidWiz gives you the flexibility to install a single node installation, multi-node installation, or two node installation. Even if all that you are installing on one particular node is the database of your configuration, it is important that you use RapidWiz to run the installation and not simply lay down the binaries with runInstaller. This is because the installation configures the preseeded database, the environment files, and the init.ora file for your Apps database.

Further, you can install everything under one account if you are doing a single node installation. You can create different accounts to own different pieces of the installation, which is necessary if you are doing a multi-node installation, but is also useful on a single node installation. If you are installing a single node with different owners of the different pieces, it is necessary to install as root or administrator depending on your OS.

Auto Upgrade

Auto Upgrade (adaimgr) is run when upgrading to the latest version of Oracle Apps. Auto Install Manager was renamed Auto Upgrade when Oracle released Rapid Install; it remains an important part of the full Oracle E-Business Suite package and the command used to run it was maintained as well.

Auto Upgrade is invoked by typing adaimgr at the command prompt after the environment has been set to the proper instance. It can be started while in any directory and is driven by interactive screens that prompt you for input.

You can stop an upgrade process at any point by typing abort. Auto Upgrade saves the actions that it had taken up to that point to allow it to pick up where it left off. The restart files that it builds will help drive the proceedings when you are ready to restart the process, allowing it to not have to redo much of the work that it had already done.

If a database error occurs during the upgrade process, it can be rectified independently without having to interrupt the upgrade process. This can be very important, because there are significantly different space requirements between 10.7, 11.0, and the 11i releases in both the applications layer and the database layer. It is good to not have to worry about needing to restart AutoUpgrade if one (or several) tablespaces run out of space. Simply add space and tell the process that it can safely continue.
