19.1. Critical Application Classes

 < Day Day Up >

Critical applications are software essential to business continuity, and can be classified as either mission-critical or business-critical.

Mission-critical applications require 100% uptime. The unavailability of one of these systems can have tragic or extreme consequences. Examples of mission-critical applications include such functions as air traffic control, 911 emergency call centers, stock exchange trading floors, and aerospace mission control.

As compared to mission-critical applications, business-critical applications can tolerate minimal interruptions. A business-critical application is extremely important to a company, but small amounts of downtime are allowed. These applications include the following:

  • Electronic transfers in banking

  • Company payroll systems

  • Human resources systems

  • Workgroup applications

  • Reservation systems

  • Cash machine systems

  • Transportation logistics systems

  • Messaging (e-mail) systems

  • E-commerce sites
