16.4. Systems Management Home Page

 < Day Day Up >

Along with the management agents, HP provides an HTTP server that is viewable using a standard Web browser through port 2301 or 2381. From the agent home page on this HTTP server, IT administrators have access to all Web-enabled HP management software active on the HP device. The HTTP server enables administrators to view system status and to manage their systems from anywhere using a standard Web browser.

Figure 16-1 shows a typical systems management home page.

If you are using a Windows-based system, you can monitor your server locally with this address: https://127.0.0.1:2381 or https://localhost:2381.

To monitor your server remotely, use this address: https://machine:2381 (where machine is the IP address or the computer name under Domain Name System [DNS]).

Note

The 2381 that follows the URL represents the port or socket number that the Insight Management agents use to communicate with the browser. If this number is not specified, the browser might attempt to connect to another Web page if the managed server is running a Web server.

If you are using a non-Windows operating system, use this address to monitor your server locally: http://127.0.0.1:2301 or http://localhost:2301.

To monitor your server remotely, use http://machine:2301 (where machine is the IP address or the computer name under DNS).

16.4.1 Point Management

Point management uses the browser to establish point-to-point connections with each manageable device in the network. Each device displays one or more HTML pages that show the overall status of the device and its subsystems. The browser interface enables the administrator to use a single console to display information about multiple devices.

Other hyperlinks can be created on these pages to enable the administrator to gather more information from various sources, such as CD-ROMs, online databases, or Help files.

Point management is an ideal solution for small networks with fewer than a hundred devices because of the low entry cost and ease of use. However, point management does not work as well across larger networks. In addition, you cannot use this solution to manage devices that use different management protocols or standards.
